Andrew Van Tassel is a jazz saxophonist, composer, and educator based in New York City.

Rooted in the tradition of improvised jazz music, Andrew’s original compositions display a hybrid of musical genres, blending the exploratory nature of improvisation with classical, indie-rock, and folk music.

His most recent release, It’s Where You Are (Tone Rogue Records), received international praise from publications and jazz critics alike, and was recognized as a top 10 release in 2016 by several publications. An original composition from his latest record has garnered attention as a recipient of the 2017 ASCAP Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composer Award.

Andrew’s bands have performed at several of Manhattan’s most esteemed venues, such as The Jazz Gallery, the Cornelia Street Café, the Bar Next Door, and more. His quartet has also given back to younger musicians, serving most recently as guest artists and clinicians at the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill.

Andrew’s formal education has taken him to some of the most prestigious music schools in the country, including the Manhattan School of Music and New England Conservatory. While earning his Master’s Degree on scholarship at NEC, he honed his skills under the tutelage of jazz luminaries Jerry Bergonzi, Donny McCaslin, John McNeil, and MacArthur Fellows Jason Moran and Miguel Zenon. It was during this time that he was able to begin to develop his own approach to both his instrument and improvisation.

As a performer, he has received accolades by the likes of the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP), the Loyola Jazz Festival, the University of North Carolina, the New England Conservatory, and more. Andrew is now establishing himself as an emerging voice in the New York music scene.
