Andrew Van Tassel is a jazz saxophonist, composer, and educator based in New York City.
Andrew’s music is rooted in traditional and contemporary jazz, with influences from classical, indie-rock, and folk music. His recent release on Tone Rogue Records, It’s Where You Are, features some of the brightest young musicians in the New York music scene including Julian Shore, Ben Eunson, Michael Thomas, Edward Perez, and Colin Stranahan. An original composition from his new record has garnered attention as the recipient of an Honorable Mention in the 2017 ASCAP Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composer Award.
Currently Andrew resides in New York City where he performs as a sideman and leader of his own band. After focusing several years on developing his trio playing with bass and drums at the Bar Next Door in Manhattan, Andrew continues to perform traditional jazz repertoire while also exploring new sounds, structures, and ideas with his own group. He has also been enjoying bi-coastal orchestral based musical collaborations as a soloist and improviser.
Andrew’s formal education has taken him to prestigious schools including the Manhattan School of Music, The University of North Carolina, and the New England Conservatory. While earning his Master’s Degree on scholarship at NEC, he honed his skills under the tutelage of jazz luminaries including Jerry Bergonzi, Donny McCaslin, John McNeil, and MacArthur Fellows Jason Moran and Miguel Zenon. It was during this time that he was able to begin to develop his own approach to both his instrument and improvisation.
As a performer, he has received accolades by the likes of the Loyola Jazz Festival, the University of North Carolina, the New England Conservatory, and more. Andrew is now establishing himself as an emerging voice in the New York music scene.
"His new album It's Where You Are confirms what many musicians already know, this guy is the real deal...outstanding chops but that doesn't take away from the fact these musicians play as an exceptional unit... It's Where You Are should certify Van Tassel as a major player in contemporary/traditional jazz. A highly recommended release from Tone Rogue Records."
Sea of Tranquility
"An emerging talent of the New York Jazz scene...The music by Van Tassel,
very well rooted in the jazz tradition, has the advantage of seeking new paths,
different textures and sounds, taking inspiration from other genres, from classical
to folk to some indie rock...great elegance and intensity."
“Andrew Van Tassel brings post bop sounds with...richly brewing sounds over the restless rhythm on pieces like “High Holborn” and the gentle cadence of the dreamy ”Goodnight Moon.” On soprano, he and the regulars go passionate on the waltzy “It’s Where You Are” as Perez’s bass delivers a rich pulse. Shore’s piano is solemn on the mellow “Hold Still” and goes soul-cool on keyboards... Brainy with a heart.”

“A solid sax man that's finding his footing and his style as he finds his way in a world
without rules anymore, his blowing will take him to the right places. Working here in
very much a laid back after hours mode, he's not out to roll you over in skronk-just
take you on a nice trip. Everyone is in sync here and the results are top notch throughout.”
